Hey there!
I am known best among my peers as a writer of longform genre fiction. I endeavor to dismantle, or perhaps loosen, genre barriers and cross boundaries, thus creating room for overlap that makes my work stand out. As such, the works of fiction I appreciate the most and have had the most significant impact on me as an artist are works that also seek to cross those boundaries, to aspire for something new, even if creating something truly and wholly original in an artistic space is near impossible. However, despite the near impossibility of originality, I believe it’s something every artist should aim for even if they can’t reach it because it’s worth it when all is said and done.
My Story
I began writing creatively when I was seventeen years old. I had just ended my junior year of high school at the height of the Covid-19 Pandemic and was soon to begin my senior year. It was a time of great emotional turbulence for me, at once bringing enlightenment as well as dread for my own future as I was beginning to enter a world in conflict with itself. There was an increase in racial conflict with the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and Asian Americans being wrongfully blamed for the existence of Covid-19, becoming victims of targeted violence thereafter. All of this happening while, globally, people are having to stay inside and restructure their lives to prevent the spread of a virus. One would think that, in the face of a common enemy, the world would pool together its resources and combat it as a unified collective, but instead we chose to fight one another.

I found myself at an impasse where I became concerned with the trajectory of the world but was still eager to explore it. I did this through my writing, through creating worlds that challenged people to put their differences aside to face a common enemy. Stories of conflicts between humankind and another sapient species aren’t new. Artists have deigned to imagine how humankind would react to another species invading our world. In many of these stories, humankind eventually triumphs over the invaders by putting aside differences to fight against a common foe. This reflects the aspect of genre fiction that encourages its audiences to dream that the nations of the worlds not only could but would pool together its resources to fight our common enemy. Though this dream does not align with our world in real life, I still wanted to hold on to it because that's what makes me and my work special at the end of the day. I still feel the same way.
